Mayoral & City Council 2025 Election Information

Voter Registration

Eligibility to Vote

  • 18 years old as of Election Day
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Resident of Groton, CT
  • Have not been convicted of a disenfranchising felony, or if so, your voting rights have been restored

Party Affiliation Changes

Affiliation changes can be made at any time during the year with restrictions only during Primaries. 

** You may make changes to your party affiliation any time up to 90 days before any Primary from one major party to another major party after that date, you will not be eligible to vote in the primary but will be registered in that party for the regular election. Changing from Unaffiliated to a major party requires no wait to become a member of the party.

Absentee Ballot Voting

If you are unable to or prefer not to vote in person on Election Day, please request an Absentee Ballot from the City of Groton Clerk, Dani Baycura. To receive the ballot, an application must be filed with the City of Groton Clerk. Applications are available by calling or visiting the Clerk’s office; (860) 446-4102; 295 Meridian Street, Groton, CT; or you can fill it out online, here.

To vote via absentee in the Town Election, residents will need to also file application with the Town Clerk. Click here for more information. 

Can I vote absentee?

Connecticut has strict laws regarding who can vote absentee.

  • Are you an active member of the armed forces of the United States?
  • Will you be out of town on Election Day?
  • Does sickness prevent you from voting in person on Election Day?
  • Do your religious beliefs prevent you from performing secular activities like voting on Election Day?
  • Will you be performing duties as an election official at a polling place other than your own on Election Day?
  • Does a physical disability prevent you from voting in person on election day?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are eligible to vote absentee.

To receive an absentee ballot for the City Municipal Election, an application must be filed with the City Clerk.

  • An absentee ballot will be mailed to you beginning:
    • 31 days before a general election
    • 21 days before a primary
    • 19 days before a referendum
    • Or if your application is received after the above dates, your ballot will be mailed to you as soon as your application is processed.
  • Complete the ballot, carefully following the instructions that are included and return it by mail or in person.
  • Only complete absentee ballots received before the close of polls on the day of the election will be counted. 

Same Day Registration (SDR)

Any person who qualifies as eligible to register to vote may register in a General Election and cast a ballot on Election Day/Early Voting at the SDR location which is Groton Community Center Building (Old Fitch Middle School), 61 Fort Hill Road, Groton from 6 am – 8 pm on Election Day (must be in line at 8 pm so come early just to be safe). The SDR Law does not apply to Special Elections, Referenda or Primaries. Please contact the Registrar’s, if you have additional questions (860) 441-6650.

ID and Proof of Residency Requirement 

Please bring ID’s with you that prove your Identity (examples: Driver’s License, Passport, Work ID) and one that proves residence within the last 30 days (examples: Utility Bill, credit card statement, Bank Statement
