Mission Statement:
The mission of the Human Resources Department is to provide excellent customer service to the employees and the general public and to strive for the highest standards in providing quality service, supporting a work environment that attracts, retains and rewards talented and motivated people, and provides training and resources to the employees to fulfill our goals and objectives.

The City of Groton workforce is comprised of 78.8% males and 21.2% females. We received 191 applications for full time employee positions advertised. We hired eight new employees during the period July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. For seasonal part time positions in the Parks and Recreation and Public Works Department we received 104 applications and hired 71.

The City of Groton partners with Ella T. Grasso Vocational Technical School in providing students an opportunity to work during their school year with the employees in Groton Utilities through the internship program. At the current time we have three interns as part of this program.

Employee training is on-going throughout the organization. Training can vary from on-line courses, classroom work, seminars, conferences or webinars. Some training that our employees have received are: Harassment; Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); first aid, blood borne pathogens; workplace violence, diversity, ergonomics, sabotage, distraction, confined space, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); risk assessment; safety; hazard communication; bucket rescue truck; nuts and bolts to managing employees; dealing with stress; back safety; back injury prevention; defensive driving; scaffolding competent person; working outdoors; chlorine handling procedures and chain saw safety.

Pre-employment testing (medical examination and drug testing) and background checks are conducted on all candidates who are hired for full time, part-time, seasonal and internship positions

The City of Groton employees and officials are actively involved in the community through civic groups such as mentoring, Rotary, Lions and Elks Clubs, SHRM, IAAP, IMPA, APPA and AWWA. The City of Groton participates in events to raise money for charitable groups including: United Way, American Heart Association, Special Olympics; Tip-a-Cop; Muscular Dystrophy; Relay for Life; and Disabled American Veterans.
